Unless it's been done before, then you only need hack the ring off and perhaps double check the diameter.

Given that the flywheel is both cheap and easy to replace with a better one at this stage ( and a total bloody pain to replace if the surface causes issues) I can see no logic for sticking with this pitted one.

Charles, I can't fault your logic, fortunately I'm in no hurry to resolve the issue of the flywheel as I'm in the early stages of my restoration, it'll be quite a while before engine / clutch go back together so meanwhile I'll keep my eyes open for a suitable replacement.
