I like the romantic explanation, but unless we find his diaries... or perhaps Ritas, presuming she probably outlived him. Add to that the cavalier attitude to using parts that came to hand, which must have been semi-official at least, it is not surprising that no two cars are alike and many do not fit neatly into the published sequences.
