Thanks everyone for your input. I plan to borrow a couple of 17" wheels, after checking the rolling radius, to simulate the axle ratio change. If I like the result, I'll try and fit a 5.25 CW&P. The car is fitted with a banjo rear axle. I also have a D type axle assembly with a 5.25 diff. Does anyone know if the CW&P parts are interchangeable please? Alan RE: Gearing for EA Sports - Ruairidh Dunford - 02-09-2018 Can you post a photo of the Banjo casing you currently have please? RE: Gearing for EA Sports - Chris KC - 02-09-2018 I think directly interchangeable only if you have a late banjo axle (1931-2) and an early D axle (pre-1934). A post -'34 D axle has a 1.125" step on the pinion shaft, which in theory can be ground off to fit the earlier ('31-'32, '32-'34) types. Though for my money I'd look for another one. [attachment=3686] RE: Gearing for EA Sports - Ruairidh Dunford - 02-09-2018 That appears to be a 1930-32 type and ‘almost’ all the c/w and pinions will fit in it. Certainly a 5.25 will. Chris, Am I correct in thinking that if the D axle has non-Girling brakes, I should be OK? I am using a 5.25 axle with 15" wheels (145-15 rear, 125-15 front) and a late 4 speed box with Keith Rawson close ratio gears (straight cut so they do whine, and I get questions about the supercharger!). This combination suits me. I have driven a standard Ulster to Sweden and was very impressed with second gear; I never checked the rear axle ratio. Erm, not sure Alan, especially as quite a few earlier axles have been converted to Girling brakes. I'd look for the date on the casing as a start point, if it doesn't say '34 you know where you are. If it does, you may draw some tentative conclusions by poring over various lists of changes and dates, but it's still a bit of a lottery I'd say. RE: Gearing for EA Sports - Robert Foreman - 02-09-2018 If you have a stepped later pinion shaft you don't need grind it down, just fit a LRJ roller race instead. If you choose to grind it then it needs to be perfect otherwise you will have issues developing. RE: Gearing for EA Sports - Ian Williams - 02-09-2018 Alan, changing the rear axle ratio will not help your gearbox issue, if anything it will make first even less usable, bite the bullet and sort out the gearbox before you start mucking around swapping CWP's |
