RE: Pedants' Corner - John Mason - 06-12-2021 Tony don’t just single out the hard left socialists the fascists are as bad. John Mason RE: Pedants' Corner - Duncan Grimmond - 06-12-2021 I'd say they were worse! Myanmar springs to mind.... though it were Burma when I were a lad! Strange that so many ex- British Empire nations we created by drawing straight lines on a map have ended up with dictators in charge. Where did they learn that from I wonder? European imperialism, US imperialism or Chinese imperialism leaves damaged people in its wake. RE: Pedants' Corner - David Stepney - 06-12-2021 Yes, Duncan Imperialism does! And this is probably true since the Hittites and Babylonians. It is said that all tyrants fall eventually bit what isn't said is that they are usually replaced by others! RE: Pedants' Corner - Duncan Grimmond - 06-12-2021 We don’t learn from history and thus are condemned to repeat it… RE: Pedants' Corner - Tony Press - 07-12-2021 Why has a bush become a bushing? More than one Bush ? A pipe become a line. Short for Pipeline ? Petrol become fuel? Do you mean Motor Spirit ? Windscreen become windshield? American name. . Brake linings are becoming pads. When disc brakes came into use. Discuss. RE: Pedants' Corner - David Stepney - 07-12-2021 It may be an oxymoron, Bob, but it is nevertheless true. In this respect, mankind is a bit like Sisyphus: as soon at we think we are making progress, we are suddenly back to square one. RE: Pedants' Corner - Duncan Grimmond - 07-12-2021 Greek myth mixed with BBC Football commentary? Now there's a Clash of the Titans.... RE: Pedants' Corner - Chris Garner - 07-12-2021 " I have got " !!!!!!!!!!! RE: Pedants' Corner - Reckless Rat - 07-12-2021 Double negatives, such as "I ain't done nuffink" Duncan mentioned Mayanmar (previously Burma) in an earlier post. I have an AA badge in the RP which someone gave to me years and years ago, which I thought was Burmese. The post prompted me to research it and it turns out that it is actually from what is now Malaysia. It's exactly the same as this one, except is says Selanghor Pahang instead of Perak State. I presume just a different branch. |
