But if it became the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha when Victoria married Albert, why didn't it become the House of Mountbatten when Elizabeth married Philip?

RE: Pedants' Corner - Duncan Grimmond - 05-12-2021

Because Mountbatten was originally Battenberg, pink and yellow and wrapped in marzipan, couldn't get him to stay in the saddle...as long as we're happy to be ruled by a cake we might as well have some of Mr Kipling's French Fancies

This hopefully explains why

Nothing to do with Austin Sevens of course, but an interesting diversion none the less. We still have a monarchy for political and religious reasons. By that I mean we have a "constitutional " monarchy. Should a political Party have a majority for the dissolution of the Monarchy as Head of State in favour of a directly elected Presidency they could sweep away a thousand years of tradition. Having said that, I suspect such a move would trigger a National Referendum and unless there were a massive swing against the Monarchy, if Charles- or more likely William - stood for election as King they would win hands down. The reason, I suppose, is that people generally don't like change unless they can see it is acting against their interests.

Now mods, must nearly be time to shut this down. Discussing the monarchy and their religious role will soon lead to asking whether one supports Celtic or Rangers, followed by brawling in the pub car park.

Never mind the Mods what about the Rockers.
Anyone up for a bank holiday trip to Brighton.

RE: Pedants' Corner - Reckless Rat - 05-12-2021

There is no justification whatsoever in taking this thread down. Whilst a small number of contributors have expressed reservations (and I support without prejudice their right to express them) this is the second most popular thread currently on the forum, having attracted over 156 posts and nearly 5000 views. You have to go back several pages in the subject list to find anything more popular - two threads about the RK restoration by Parazine and the Highland Coupé project. I've only gone back 17 pages, but that seems to hammer the nail home.

If you don't like it, fine, that's your prerogative, but it's like the TV. You don't have to watch - you can always switch off.

B.Liar says to his Chief Op. "Let's have a victory parade, I'll take the salute."
"No, you won't. You're not head of state. The queen is."
"But she's no political power. She just figurehead."
Exactly," replies the Chief Op."With a P.M. as head of state, it wouldn't be five minutes before their ugly mugs were on bill-board sized posters all over the country, dressed I'm military uniform and bedecked with every medal going, just like in every other hard-left socialist country."

So true, Tony.

Quod erat demonstrandum:
