Removing my glasses for my morning ablutions yesterday, one of the lenses fell out onto the bathroom floor, closely followed by the tiny screw that holds that side of the frame that secures the lens. Fortunately I have a spare pair of specs, but the screw being really small could not be found.
It being a reasonably dry day today, (we even had ten minutes of sunshine this morning), and the Seven not having been out for about three weeks,(the last time it was out and about was the 3rd November, I notice) I decided that I would take it over to Dolgellau some 18 miles distant, to get my glasses repaired.
The forest track from my house to the main road, and, indeed the main roads themselves were still filthy from all the wet weather we have endured here in the Welsh fastnesses just recently, so, by the time I had got back home, the little car looked as it it had been on trialing event. Mind you, my Mk2 Polo, being my everyday transport, looks like that permanently is spite of being washed once a week, so I busied myself this afternoon in washing both cars and leathering them off before putting them in the garage.
I may even amuse myself by wax polishing them both this evening!

Ah David, the Royal Ship Hotel, stayed there with my now late parents on a number of occasions during the 1960's and very early 70's whilst visiting the Welsh narrow gauge lines - most of them within an easy distance of Dolgellau. I've a colour tranny somewhere showing my Dad's white Austin 1800 (landcrab) parked just where your Seven's standing at the front of the Hotel. Back in the 60's they'd allow residents to park their cars undercover at the back of the hotel overnight - happy days.

This weekend, my new wooden garage went up. I need to wait for it to dry out fully as it was rained on overnight when on the back of the lorry. When it is dry I shall be able to give it a coat of decking oil and start fitting it out with shelves and benches. I should soon be able to start on the actual car.

Decking oil - That's a NO NO in my books. Its not ecological, not bee friendly and you will have to repeat the treatment over and over and over again - don't believe what is printed on the tin. BUT I have found this stuff

Its a Canadian product used by their forestry commission for an ecological wood treatment - 1 coat for the life of your wooden structure (Yes LIFE) - used above and below ground, even for wood submersed in water. I sprayed mine on with a sprayer similar to one used for spraying underseal. Its waterbased, non toxic, bee friendly and prevents rot (Not wood worm).

It took me less than 40 mins to spray a double garage that I built out of Douglas fir. The product is in powder form which you add water to - don't be fooled by the small size of the packet - It has a high dilution rate.
I am really impressed with this product (as you may have guessed!)

Interesting stuff. Is it a wood preservative or a water repellent? The wood is tanalised, which I understand is a preservative treatment.

As I understand it, it is applied to new wood without water proof coatings (I guess tanilised is ok), It alters the surface structure of the wood to protect against rot - That's all I read from the blurb except that it has been on the market for 60 years in Canada and adopted by the Canadian state authorities, so that was good enough for me. I never saw that sort of disclaimer on any other treatment including creosote !
One has to make up one's own mind on these things.

My raised veg beds in a tanalised wood have survived ten tears of wild Peak District weather without any further treatment and are still perfect. I've removed the Dynamater alternator to check the drive gears for wear as owners have reported that they can sometimes have strange wear patterns. All seems ok, the drive gear is definitely noisier than when it had the original dynamo but I can live with it for the extra performance on the unit. Lights stay bright and the ammeter stays the right side now when they are on. I'm also using their electronic distributor - a good pair of upgrades which keep the original look under the bonnet
