Austin Seven Steering Arms

The above photograph shows the main problem found on Austin Seven steering arms. Cracks in this area are of major concern.

Many Austineers recommend cleaning the arm and polishing the area around this bend to show up any flaws. Others carry out crack testing using dyes etc. The steering arm shown in these photographs looked fine under even close examination but when X-rayed a deep crack was found (see the second photograph on this page). The photograph above shows how much of the radius needed to be removed to actually see the crack. This makes one wonder if these arms were actually manufactured with these flaws?
